FDA Updates Ortho Evra Label

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

In September 2006, the FDA decided to update the Ortho Evra birth control patch label to reflect a serious warning to women using it. The updated label cites a study that shows that use of the patch can double a woman's risk of blood clots and other complications, when compared with use of birth control pills.

According to a Sept. 20 question and answer document about Ortho Evra on the FDA Web site, the revision to the label includes a new bolded warning about higher estrogen exposure.

Still No Change in Formulation

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

Despite knowledge so strong that the FDA required a warning that the Ortho Evra Patch is dispensing overdoses of estrogen to unsuspecting women, the manufacturer still has made no change in design for the U.S. market. Other countries have the patch, but in lower doses of estrogen, making it safer for risks of strokes, blood clots and heart attacks. Why isn't the FDA acting on this important health issue? Is it because they are bought and paid for by pharmaceutical money?

Severe Ortho Evra Risks

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

Despite the comfort level women seem to have with birth control, some forms of it can cause serious side effects and even death. The Ortho Evra patch, manufactured by Ortho-McNiel, a division of Johnson and Johnson, significantly increases users' exposure to estrogen, which in turn increase the risk of blood clots and death.

Should Menstruation Be Optional?

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

There's an interesting article by Linda A. Johnson, Associated Press that ran Sunday, exploring the trend forwomen to use birth control pills or other hormonal contraceptives to supress monthly periods. One 22-year-old woman interviewed had not experienced a period since she was 17 years old, due to her continuous use of the Nuvaring, a vaginal contraceptive ring. Rather than allowing for menstruation after the third week, she just replaces it with a new ring.

Ortho Evra - Warning Changed but no one is helped

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

Fascinating that even though the new warning for Ortho Evra birth control patche clearly states that the patch use results in getting 60% more estrogen than expected, the product is still on the market! Women are still wearing what can now only be considered a dangerous product. The danger of such high doses of estrogen was established years ago for oral contraceptives and the FDA required lower doses for the Pill. Why hasn't the same been done for the patch? Some Republicans on the payroll no doubt. Look for the news articles on Bush's last FDA appointment now being charged with accepting bribes. See link.

Increased Genetic Risks Associated with Ortho Evra Patch

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

Doctors are suggesting that the risk of stroke may be 300% higher with the Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch. These increased risk factors in women using the stroke may be exacerbated by certain genetic traits such as an imbalance of "Factor 5" or "Factor 8" the clotting factors found in human blood. One such mutation is known as the "Factor 5 Leiden Mutation" which affects between 2-5% of the United States population and is relatively simple to diagnose.

Ortho Evra Warning of Increased Risk of Stroke

Category: Ortho Evra Warnings

If you have suffered a heart attack, stroke or blood clot while using the Ortho Evra birth control patch, you may need to contact an attorney or law firm familiar with Ortho Evra birth control patch litigation.

In November 2005, Ortho McNeil, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, issued an Ortho Evra birth control patch warning to millions of women revealing that the patch exposes them to significant amounts of the hormone estrogen (about 60 percent more than regular birth control pills) and may put them at greater risk of developing blood clots. According to Ortho Evra attorneys involved in lawsuits filed against the patch’s maker, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 20 reports of blood clots and other adverse events associated with the use of the Ortho Evra birth control patch.
