A May 13, 2006 L.A. Times news story reported that Johnson and Johnson settled Ortho Evra lawsuits with 30 women who claimed they developed blood clots while using the birth control patch. Recent studies reported that women using Ortho Evra were exposed to 60% more estrogen than women using oral contraceptives, and that these women were twice as likely to develop blood clots on Ortho Evra vs. The Pill.
These Ortho Evra lawsuits were settled in New Jersey, Texas, California, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
One of the plaintiffs was a 40-year-old mother of two who suffered a massive stroke after using the Ortho Evra patch for just 12 days. She is now a quadraplegic with brain damage and requires 24-hour care.
A May 7 northjersey.com article says that 37 lawsuits have been filed in New Jersey alone, including reports of otherwise healthy young women developing severe blood clots, stroke, heart attack and even death while using the Ortho Evra birth control patch.
